Enjoy Wimberley's Thriving Art Scene
Wimberley’s scenic beauty has attracted artists and creatives for more than a century, transforming the town into a hub for artistic expression. Today, Wimberley is known for its vibrant arts community, with numerous galleries, studios, and cultural events.
In fact, the Texas Commission on the Arts has designated the Wimberley Valley a distinct State Cultural District. The arts community is supported locally by the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance, an excellent resource for locals and visitors alike. The entire Wimberley Valley continually celebrates its artistic heritage, so if you’re an art lover, plan a visit today!
Schedule your trip to coincide with the city’s First Thursday Art Crawl, which begins at 5:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. Most of the valley’s galleries will offer art events, food, and entertainment during the evening, with changing themes every month.
If you’re visiting in the springtime, be sure to check out the Wimberley Arts Fest, which attracts more than 100 local and regional artisans. The festival also features live music, great food, and a classic car show in a picturesque outdoor setting. In the fall, Wimberley hosts the Blue Agave Art Fair, a juried event held at the Community Center.
Public art displays feature prominently in the Wimberley Valley, too. Roughly 50 six-foot-tall cowboy boots are installed throughout the area. Known as “Bootiful Wimberley,” these colorful artistic statements reflect Wimberley's history, natural beauty, and culture.
Murals also play a prominent role in the city’s bustling art scene. From businesses to water silos to sheds, vivid large-format paintings can be found throughout the Valley. Inside the Community Center, visitors can find three sections of Buck Winn’s famous 280-foot mural, A History of Ranching, which was originally commissioned by San Antonio’s Pearl Brewery in 1950.
In addition to visiting Wimberley’s many fine art galleries, visit the student-run project ART ARTSPACE. The cooperative nurtures and inspires young artists and provides real-world experiences that give area students the tools to pursue their creative ambitions and meaningfully contribute to their future communities.
If musical expression is your thing, it’s almost impossible to miss the live music emanating from the town’s bars, restaurants, and businesses. The community is known for its unwavering support of its musicians. Homegrown talent is featured live on KWVH 94.3FM, the Wimberley Valley’s own community-supported radio station. Well-known artists, including Paul Simon, Sarah Jarosz, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Slaid Cleaves have all called Wimberley home.
