Schoolyard Dogs Food Truck
Schoolyard Dogs was born out of necessity. Roger and Mickey are the proud parents of two boys: Jasper and Rufus. When they were 22 and 9 months, respectively, they were diagnosed with autism. Jasper was later additionally diagnosed with Intellectual Disability. Both received SPED and other services throughout their youth and did great. But once the boys graduated, Mickey and Roger thought, 'Now what?' As you may know, there are very few resources for disabled adults in just about every area of life: housing, recreation, life skills, but particularly in job training and employment.
With an eye to the future, Roger and Mickey purchased a Special Education school bus with a plan to convert it into a hot dog food truck and train Jasper and Rufus to work on it. As time went on, they decided to run it as a nonprofit and hire and train other disabled adults in the Wimberley Valley. As a nonprofit, Roger and Mickey expanded their vision to include a variety of job training, employment, and social opportunities.
After three years, the school bus is finally completed and operating in Wimberley. We opened on July 4, 2024 — a nod to 'Independence Day' and our mission to help our employees live independent lives!
Next up: opening a commercial kitchen and establishing a community center for neurodivergent adults in the Wimberley area. Follow us to track our progress and see how you can help!
